Raw milk is medicine!


Raw milk, unpasteurized and unprocessed, has been consumed by humans for millennia. Historically, it was not only a staple in the diet but also used therapeutically.

Galen, Hippocrates, Pliny, Varro, Marcellus Empiricus, Bacchis, and Anthimus, leading physicians of their day, all used raw milk in the treatment of disease.


During the early 1900s, Dr. J. E. Crewe of the Mayo Foundation used an exclusive raw milk diet to cure TB, edema, heart failure, high blood pressure, prostate disease, urinary tract infections, diabetes, kidney disease, chronic fatigue, and obesity.


Today, in Germany, successful raw milk therapy is provided in some hospitals.


In several countries, including France, Austria, and Germany, raw milk is commonly available in grocery stores. We are now living in the Alps in France, and I can say that raw milk and raw cheese is a big party of the daily diet.


Nutritional Superiority


Raw milk has a much higher nutritional content compared to pasteurized milk. The process of pasteurization, which involves heating milk to kill harmful bacteria, reduce or eliminate also the good bacterias and beneficial nutrients. Raw milk retains its full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, including:


1. Vitamins: Raw milk is a rich source of vitamins A, B, C, and D. These vitamins are crucial for maintaining good vision, a healthy immune system, and proper cellular function.

2. Minerals: It contains essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus in their natural, more bioavailable forms. This means the body can absorb and utilize these nutrients more efficiently.

3. Enzymes: Pasteurization destroy valuable enzymes such as lactase, which helps digest lactose, and phosphatase, which aids in the absorption of calcium. The presence of these enzymes in raw milk can aid digestion and improve nutrient absorption.


Beneficial Bacteria and Probiotics


One of the most significant benefits of raw milk is its natural content of probiotics. These beneficial bacteria are known to support a healthy gut microbiome, which is essential for overall health. Probiotics in raw milk can:

Lactose intolerance occurs when the body lacks sufficient lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose, the sugar in milk. Raw milk naturally contains lactase, which can help individuals digest lactose more effectively. Many people who experience discomfort from consuming pasteurized milk find that they can tolerate raw milk without the same issues. This is because the lactase in raw milk assists in the digestion of lactose, alleviating symptoms such as bloating, cramps, and diarrhea.



Importance of Cow Life and Diet


The health benefits of raw milk are closely tied to the life and diet of the cows that produce it. Cows raised on organic, pasture-based diets produce milk that is higher in beneficial nutrients and free from harmful additives. Grass-fed cows produce milk with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and antioxidants, all of which contribute to better health outcomes for consumers. Ensuring cows have a natural diet and humane living conditions definitely improves the quality of the milk.


Full-Fat Milk: Essential for Health


Consuming full-fat milk is crucial for obtaining the complete range of health benefits that raw milk offers. The fat in milk contains essential fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. These vitamins play critical roles in maintaining various bodily functions, including immune system support, bone health, and cellular repair. Additionally, the natural fats in milk contribute to better satiety and can aid in weight management by reducing overall calorie intake. Full-fat milk also contains healthy fatty acids like omega-3s and CLA, which are associated with reduced inflammation and improved heart health.


The Downsides of UHT Milk


Ultra-High Temperature (UHT) milk, commonly found in supermarkets, is heated to very high temperatures to extend its shelf life. While this process kills harmful bacteria, it also destroys beneficial nutrients and enzymes. UHT milk is a "dead" nature, lacking the living enzymes and beneficial bacteria found in raw milk. As a result, UHT milk not offer the same health benefits and can be harder to digest for some people. For me, milk sold in supermarkets should not be called milk, as the extensive processing fundamentally changes its nutritional profile and health benefits.




Conclusion


Raw milk (and raw cheese!) offers a range of potential benefits, from superior nutritional content to health advantages. Consuming full-fat raw milk, sourced from cows raised on natural diets, ensures the best possible intake of essential nutrients and health-promoting compounds. By sourcing raw milk responsibly and handling it with care, consumers can enjoy its benefits without fear.


As with any dietary choice, consulting with healthcare professionals is the key to making the best decisions for one's health.
